New Year's Devotion: Entering 2012 With Hope

good morning welcome to our Bible study this morning this morning we'll be looking at Jeremiah chapter 29 and verse number 11 Jeremiah chapter 29 in verse number 11 I thought with the new year upon us we would take a minute to look at a verse in the Bible gives us a very precious promise from the Lord a promise concerning our future so let's look at Jeremiah chapter 29 verse number 11 and see what the Lord would have for us as we enter into a new year Jeremiah 29 11 says for I know the thoughts that I think towards you saith the Lord thoughts of peace and not of evil to give you an expected end that was Jeremiah 29 and verse number 11 now please keep in mind before we go any further Jeremiah 29 11 was spoken to the physical nation of Israel in the Old Testament so I realized in the context of these verses the Lord is speaking to physical Israelites of Old Testament time but also please keep in mind and the New Testament Paul talks about a group called the Israel of God if you study the New Testament carefully you're going to find that anyone who is trusted in Christ as their Savior becomes a part of God's spiritual nation the name of that spiritual nation is the Israel God so when the Lord issues a promise to the physical nation of Israel in the Old Testament many times that promise applies to his spiritual nation of Israel as well keep in mind in the Old Testament and the physical nation of Israel you have those who were trusting in jehovah within that nation and as the Lord is speaking the promise to that nation he's speaking especially to those who were trusting in Java as their God well in the New Testament what was taking place you have those who are trusting in jehovah jesus remember means jehovah's our salvation they're trusting in Christ as their Savior just like in the Old Testament they were believing that a messiah would in the New Testament they believe the Messiah has already come so you have basically people who are trusting in the same God Jehovah God Jesus you have people trusting in the same God receiving the same promise so in the Old Testament in Jeremiah 29 11 the verse we just read we have God issuing that promise to those who are looking for a messiah to come but it also applies to those who recognize Jesus has already come and that he's the Messiah that was promised those who are looking for the Messiah and who have trusted in them aside that has already come they make up spiritual Israel God's spiritual nation and so in my mind Jeremiah 29 11 even though in the context he is talking to physical Israelites who were looking for the Messiah to come I believe that this promise also applies to those of us who are saved in New Testament times because we're a part of spirits was real we are trusting in that same aside at the Old Testament Jews were trusting in they were trusting in him to come we are trusting that he has already come okay let's look at what this promise has for us those who are trusting in Jesus as the Messiah those who are trusting in Jesus as our Savior let's see what this promise has for us this morning again he says for I know the thoughts that I think toward you in the context if you study the word thoughts here it's the idea of thoughts you know the Lord thinking about us but especially its plans for our life so when the Lord says I know the thoughts and I have told you he's saying I know the plans I've made for your life I know all the thoughts that I placed upon you concerning your future and concerning plans for your life what's that tell us right off the bat our Lord is interested in us as individuals he's so interested in us as individuals he actually made individualized plans for our life I know the plans and I've made you I know the thoughts that I think towards you what about those plans you've made for us or those thoughts you have toward us thoughts of peace and not of evil the Lord says look for those who have trusted in me as your savior for those who recognize me as the Messiah for those who are looking to me as the true God my plans for you involve plans of peace they are plans that will give you peace they're not plans that will keep you an upheaval their plans will give you peace not only not those plans I've made your life will not harm you remember in romans 8 28 and we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them bro the called according to his purpose that verse is saying basically the same thing what it's saying is this the plans that God has laid for our life the things that God allows into our life all the events of our life are for our good they're not for evil so folks keep in mind the plans that God has written for our lives whatever the Lord has planned for us in the future in this case we're talking in the context of the new year whatever the year 2012 holds for us as Christians we need to remember it's going to be for our good it's not going to God doesn't have plans for evil he doesn't have plans to harm us and to bring us down and to break us God's plans for our life for 2012 all the events are going to take place in our life in 2012 our plans for peace their plans for our good all things work together for good to them that love God to them that are the called according to his purpose k this first goes on then it says to give you an expense dead end these plans that God makes for our life that is for our good the Lord says these plans bring us to an expected end the idea of expected means something that we can place our hope and confidence in so he says they're going to bring you to an end that you can be confident about they're going to bring you as you follow this path I've laid for your life it's going to bring you to an end that is a hopeful and you can hope in this you can trust in this you can know this is where you're going to end up by us understanding that the Lord has planned our lives in advance and by us knowing that those plans will result in our benefit and our spiritual prosperity we have great hope folks it doesn't matter what takes place in our lives in 2012 it's going to be for our good if we're saying that we're trusting in Christ is our Savior we know whatever takes place in our life in 2012 it's going to be for our good and we're going to end up spiritually prospering because of those events that take place in our life the Lord has that end in mind and we can be hopeful we can look forward to what 2012 brings no matter what it might be because we know in the end it's for our good listen to what lamentations chapter 3 verses 25 and 26 says the lord is good unto them that wait for him to the soul that seeketh him it is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord let me tell you something folks that should be our attitude as we enter into 2012 we should have an attitude in our lives of hoping and quietly waiting for the salvation of the Lord but you notice the other part of this verse what it said to the soul that seeketh him in the context of being hopeful about the future and in the context of waiting upon the Lord we need to seek the Lord as Christians how do we seek the Lord by studying his word how do we seek the Lord by praying how do we seek the Lord by meditating on him by always having him in our minds how do we seek the Lord as we make day-to-day decisions always reflect on what he would have us to do concerning that decision you know if you're like me a lot of times when I'm faced with the decision I have a sentencing you just make a decision and I don't consider what the Lord wants folks we need to constantly have the Lord on our minds for everyone we're faced with a decision during the day we need to stop first and say wait a minute before I make this decision what would the Lord have me do that's very important that's a part of seeking the will of the Lord that's a part of doing what the Lord would have us to do folks if we find ourselves seeking the lord and doing his will we can be confident that the Lord is going to be with us every step of the way he has a great plan for our life and if we're following that plan that means we're going to end up being spiritually prosperous that's all a part of the Lord's grace in our lives and that's all a part of what the Lord has done for us as we seek his will there's an example in the Bible in the Book of Daniel of a king that had a real difficult time accepting the fact that the Lord had a plan for his life the King's name was King Nebuchadnezzar and I'm sure most of you all that are familiar with the Book of Daniel you remember this story Nebuchadnezzar had a real difficult time understanding the Lord had a plan for his life as a matter of fact Nebuchadnezzar thought just the opposite he thought that his life was simply his own Nebuchadnezzar thought that whatever he wanted to do with his life he could do with his life irregardless of what God wanted matter of fact Nebuchadnezzar got to the point he felt like all of his accomplishments were simply that his accomplishments he didn't give the Lord the glory in the honor that he deserved forgiving Nebuchadnezzar some tremendous military victories and some great accomplishments in his life all Nebuchadnezzar would say was tough look at the great thing I've done instead of looking how good god has been to me he's allowed me to do these things listen to Daniel 429 through 36 because he revealed the story of Nebuchadnezzar and now he had to learn about God's plan for his life and the need to submit to that plan Nebuchadnezzar had to learn that the hard way listen to what's said in Daniel 429 at the end of 12 months he that's Nebuchadnezzar walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon the king spake and said is not this great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the honor of my majesty see what the King said look at this great palace I built it I built it by my power it's for my majesty he wasn't giving God credit for anything listen to what said while the word was in the Kings mouth there fella voice from heaven saying O king nebuchadnezzar to thee it is spoken the kingdom is departed from thee they shall drive thee from men and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field they shall make thee d grass as oxen and seven times shall pass over thee until thou know that the Most High rula thin the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will can you imagine what that'd be like here this king is bragging about all that he had accomplished and all of a sudden here's this voice from heaven and the voice from heaven says never knez ER it's all coming to an end right now you haven't given God the glory you haven't given God the credit you takin all the credit on yourself now you're going to be actually driven from men the kingdom is departed from you'll be driven from men you end up living in the field like a beast and that great God is going to give your kingdom to whoever he wants listen to verse 33 the same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar he was driven from men he did eat grass as oxen his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hairs were grown like eagles feathers and his nails like birds claws can you imagine what that must have been like here the great king who had established the mighty empire of Babylon was now dwelling in the field not only acting like a beast but actually looking like a beast so what happens is that the end of Nebuchadnezzar well listen to what verse 34 says at the end of days I never knez ur lifted up mine eyes unto heaven and mine understanding returned unto me and I blessed the Most High and I praised and honored him that liveth forever whose Dominion is an everlasting Dominion and his kingdom is from generation to generation sounds like Nebuchadnezzar learned a lesson in D he learned the need to glorify God for what had taken place in his life not for him to take the credit but to give the credit to the rightful deserving one the Lord all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he do it according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth none can stay his hand or sand to him what doest thou boy I sounds like a different King before Nebuchadnezzar was saying look what I've done look at the great kingdom that I've built now he's saying all the inhabitants the earth are reputed as nothing and in the context he's talking about in God's sight he do it according to his will in the army of heaven among the inhabitants of the earth and none can daya's hander sandy and what do with fell at the same time my reason returned unto me and for the Gloria my kingdom mine honour and brightness returned unto me my counselors and my lord saw done to me and I was established in my kingdom and excellent majesty was added unto me but nebuchadnezzar saying there he's saying look I realize now the one that deserves the glory I realized now the one that deserves the honor I realized now all that God has done I realized that this kingdom that has been built was simply God building the kingdom by using me it wasn't me building the kingdom Nebuchadnezzar says it was God building the kingdom he had a plan and he worked that playing out using me to do it you see how understanding the fact that God has a plan for our life changes the way we look at everything instead of us being the ones that accomplish great things it's God accomplishing those great things through us instead of our life being out of control and things happening that we have no control over we now look at it like my lord is in control of all things he had a plan for my life and these events taking place in my life for our part of that plan it's for my good it's for me to become spiritually prosperous that's why he's allowing these things in my life see what a blessing it is to understand that the lord has made plans for our life and that we can know that there's an end to these things that end his spiritual prosperity to be stronger in him to grow in him to grow in grace and knowledge that's the expected end that God has given for each one of us so folks as we begin the year 2012 let's remember God has a in for our life everything that takes place in our life is going to be a part of that plan he won't allow anything our life that is not for our good and finally we haven't expected and we can hope we can be confident knowing that as these things take place in our life their result is going to be our spiritual prosperity that's a promise the lord has made teach one of us so as we enter into the year 2012 let's enter into that year with hope let's enter into that year encourage knowing no matter what takes place it's going to be for our good it'll be for the Lord's glory that we might become greater servants for him all we should do is simply seek his face and simply submit to his will
